Hazardous Materials
Eliminate the Hazardous Materials and Toxins around your Home
I been watching the Hoarders on A&E TV and couldn’t help but think that all of us are hoarders t at some level. While most of us are used to bring our garbage and recycling to the curb – some hazardous and waste materials can sit in our cabinets, basements or garages for years if we are not careful.
There are many people who are unaware of what is considered hazardous or special waste and where and how to safely and legally dispose these items.
It’s well known, that each home generates about 20 pounds of hazardous toxic products each year. If you don’t want to be a hazardous hoarder, these tips can help identify the hazardous and waste materials what might be found around your home.
- Clean your entire home at least once a year from top to bottom: include the cabinets, drawers, cupboards, closets, basement and garage. Search for old batteries, expired pharmaceuticals, old paint cans, old TV and electronic devices, computers, motor oil and filters from your last oil change.
- Designate an area of your home where you keep all these hazardous materials. Ensure these waste items are out of reach of children and pets. It’s important to properly seal these items.
- Don’t just throw these hazardous materials in the garbage bin as they can be very harmful in a landfill, contaminating soil and ground water then eventually making it into our rivers and lakes. Please take them to the closest waste material deposit to dispose them.
- Make it a habit to collect your hazardous items always in the designated area of you home and drop it off regularly. Just as you take your garbage to the curb once a week, have a schedule when you dispose these hazardous materials as well.
By eliminating the hazardous materials and toxins around your home you are making your home a safe place for your family, kids and help the environment too.
